The Hearn Innovators in Christian Music Series, made possible by an endowment created through the generosity of Billy Ray Hearn, is designed to bring innovators in the field of Christian music to Baylor's campus and facilitate close interaction between the guest presenter and Baylor's students. These special visitors may be involved in the practice, creation, or study of Christian Music. Presenters are on campus for a three- to four-day residency and are available to speak in classes, make public presentations, and visit with students in small group settings. This year's guests are Amanda Powell (Fall) and John Woods (Spring)
Amanda’s work in worship and song leadership began during a trip to South East Asia in 2001, supported by the Global Ministries Division of the United Methodist Church. During this music tour, she witnessed and became passionate about the power that music has to connect people from different cultures. Over the past decade, Amanda has directed, performed and presented workshops for a number of regional and national ecumenical events associated with Princeton Theological Seminary, Union Presbyterian Seminary, the United Methodist Women's Assembly, the American Guild of Organists, and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians. Amanda has served as liturgist and worship leader at events sponsored by the World Council of Churches, The United Church of Christ Church House, and the General Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church. Amanda has worked in a number of local churches, including Christ United Methodist in Northampton, MA; Trinity Episcopal in Upperville, VA; and Federated United Church of Christ in Chagrin Falls, OH. Currently, Amanda is Director of Music and Worship at Disciples Christian Church in Cleveland Heights, OH. Beyond her local and national church leadership, Amanda also works as a consultant with church communities who are in transition and looking to find their authentic "voice" in music and worship expression.
