NSF REU Program
CASPER's Summer Undergraduate Research Program (sponsored by the National Science Foundation and Baylor University) offers outstanding undergraduates an opportunity for active research participation with Baylor University faculty. The primary purpose of the Summer Research Program is to expose undergraduates interested in graduate research to an active research environment. The ten week program begins around the first of June and ends around the middle of August. (The starting and ending dates are flexible and may be adjusted by up to a week to fit personal schedules.) Interns are paid $5000 for the ten weeks, a $1000 housing allowance and up to a maximum of $400 toward travel expenses.

Potential Research Areas

Current research opportunities are available within any of the research areas listed for the Center. Additional limited research opportunities are sometimes available within the Department of Physics as well. Both of the above are dependant on faculty availability.

Brief descriptions of the currently scheduled research areas available for the summer of 2011 can be found at CASPER Professors' Research Interests and the Physics Professors' Research Interests pages.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

College undergraduates who have completed their freshman year and are interested in pursuing a career in the physical sciences are eligible to apply for a CASPER NSF REU Fellowship. (A limited number of international/non-US slots are also available through University funding.) Applicants will be considered for appointment without regard to race, creed, color, sex, national origin, age, handicap status or any other non-merit factor. Appointment selection is competitive on a national scale and will be based upon the following criteria:
  1. scholarship, curriculum and experience,
  2. career objectives and scientific interest,
  3. match of applicant interest with available research projects within the department and
  4. letters of recommendation.

Applications are currently being accepted for the summer of 2011. In order to receive full consideration, interested applicants are advised to complete their application no later than February 25, 2011. Submitted applications must include a completed application form, letters of reference and an official transcript before they will be considered.

To begin the application process, please fill out the REU Application Form online. Transcripts must be sent via snail-mail to the address below. Letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically; directions for providing letters of recommendation will be sent to your references via email based on information provided by you in the application.

Awardees will be notified by email of their acceptance into the program and must acknowledge receipt of the email no later than five days from the date of the email. For final confirmation of appointment, successful applicants must sign a letter of acceptance (or rejection) of the offer to participate within one (1) week of their receipt of the email notification.

This program is funded by CASPER, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education and Baylor University.
