Finding community in college can be a huge support during this exciting and stressful time in life.  The challenge is that sometimes community isn't so easy to find and may require us stepping out of our comfort zone.  Listen to Caroline Tinker as she shares the ways she has incorporated community into her academic life at Baylor.  She also offers some specific tips for math!

Reason for coming to Baylor:

• Mom came to Baylor and wanted to follow in her mom’s footsteps
• Toured the campus and immediately fell in love

Study strategies:

• Take notes during lectures
• Compare notes with friends
• Read through the notes and come up with a summary

Study Routine:

• Academic mentor in success center
• Schedule a time for everything

Morning routine:

If it’s a test day, wake up an hour earlier to review major points and concepts

Study spots:

• On Campus:
  • Sid Richardson building
    • Huge whiteboards to write out complex problems
  • Moody library
• Off campus:
  • Dichotomy
    • Quiet and has great coffee

Favorite coffee order:

Starbucks: iced caramel macchiato with coconut milk and extra caramel

Overcoming challenge:

• Freshman year, did not back up any files
• Computer crashed and lost all files that had notes and power points
• Always back up your files no matter how unimportant they seem

Campus Involvement:

• Mathematic Society
• Alpha Lambda Delta
• National Honors of Collegiate Society

Time-management:

• Staying on track with schedule through alarms on phone
• Take a break every once in awhile

Advice to freshman year self:

• Don’t be afraid to branch out and meet new people
• Don’t be afraid to say no
• Don’t be afraid to ask professor for help during office hours
• Find your own community
  • Found hers through line camp and Baylor LLC

Study breaks:

• Watch Netflix
  • Favorite tv show is Pretty Little Liars
• Hang out with friends

Work for a government agency as a mathematician
