CPR/First Aid and AED Instructor Certification

Registration: Bring your Baylor ID card and sign-up at the SLC Service Desk. Accepted payment types include: cash, check, F/S Payroll Deduction and credit card.Seats are limited, so plan to sign-up in advance.

    Participants must attend all class days to be certified.

Prerequisites

To participate in the course, instructor candidates must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age on the last day of the instructor course.
  • Possess current American CPR First Aid, CPR and/or AED certification(s) or the equivalent.
  • Pass First Aid/CPR/AED instructor pre-course test (with score 80 percent or better).
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course, instructor candidates should be thoroughly familiar with the program materials and should be able to:
  • Exhibit the characteristics required of an American CPR Training representative and role model
  • Conduct courses in a manner that helps participants to stay engaged in the learning process
  • Perform applicable first aid, CPR and AED skills at an appropriate skill level
  • Ensure participants' health and safety during training
  • Maintain complete and accurate records and reports
  • Plan, organize and conduct the first aid, CPR and AED courses in accordance with the requirements of the specific class they will be teaching
  • Monitor participants' practice and provide corrective feedback and encouragement that is consistent with the skill chart
  • Recognize that the requirements in the skill assessment tool are criteria for ascertaining the proficiency of a participant's performance
  • Choose the appropriate course and materials to meet the specific training needs of participants or groups

Certification Requirements

To be certified as an instructor, candidates must:

  • Successfully complete prerequisite requirement
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
  • Successfully complete class activities including two practice-teaching assignments
  • Score at least 80 percent (20 correct answers out of 25 questions) on the instructor written exam
Existing Instructors:
Must obtain and retain the new First Aid/CPR/AED participant and instructor materials.
 
Lifeguarding Instructor
Registration: Must pre-register 7 days prior to first class date to enroll in pre-course online training.

    Participants must attend all class days listed to be certified.

Prerequisites

To participate in the course, instructor candidates must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age on the last day of the instructor course.
  • Possess a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or equivalent from another organization
  • Successfully complete the Online Session for the Lifeguarding Instructor Course
  • Successfully complete the Pre-course session
  • Obtain course materials before starting the first classroom session of the Instructor course
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of the Lifeguarding Instructor course, instructor candidates should be thoroughly familiar with the program materials and should be able to:
  • Identify required information for the Course Record and Course Record Addendum to maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Explain procedures for issuing course competion certificates.
  • Deliver quality, consistent and standardized content by following the Lifeguarding Instructor's Manual.
  • Monitor participants' practice and provide positive, corrective feedback and ecnouragement consistent with the skills charts and skill assessment tools.
  • Plan, coordinate and manage training with the Red Cross, including advising Red Cross in advance of any classes you are scheduled to teach.

Online Session Requirements

To be certified as an instructor, candidates must complete each of the following as part of the Online Session:

  • Orientation to the Lifeguarding Instructor course.
  • Oreintation to the America Red Cross.
  • Review the questions used in the orientation to test your knowledge and help prepare for the Pre-course Exam.
  • Score at least 80 percent on the Pre-course instructor exam.
  • Completion of the Online Session is required prior to attending the Pre-course Session and the remaining Lifeguarding Instructor course sessions.
