Men's Rugby

Rugby Team 2017 Are there tryouts for your team?
Because rugby is a new sport for many athletes, we do not hold typical tryouts at the beginning of each season. Game day starting positions are determined based on your performance over the week of practices prior to a match, thus each practice is really a tryout. Positions are filled based on performance in practice, fitness, and how well you are grasping the game plan of the coaches.

How many days and hour/week do you practice?
Official practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at the BU Rugby Pitch in front of the BSB. Practice officially starts at 4:30pm with players typically arriving at 4pm to get prepared, kitted up, individual warm-ups etc. Practice is usually about two hours long. Most experienced players and players who want to excel at the sport will devote additional time away from the pitch on their own or with other players to work on fitness and honing individual skills. Rugby is a high intensity sport that requires attention to fitness.

Where are your games and practices held?
Practices: Tuesdays and Thursdays at the BU Rugby Pitch in front of the BSB.
Games: Games are held both home and away. The home games take place on the BU Rugby Pitch in front of the BSB. Our away games are held at the schools in our conference. All games take place on Saturdays, usually in the afternoon.

What schools do you compete against? What league are you in?
Baylor Rugby competes in the USA Rugby D1A competition, the highest level of collegiate rugby in the nation. The club is a member of the South Division of the Red River Conference, which includes The University of Arkansas, Baylor University, Louisiana State University, The University of Oklahoma, The University of Texas, Texas A&M, The University of North Texas, and Texas Tech University. During the year the club participates in two different forms of Rugby, 7s and 15s. Starting at the beginning of the fall, the club begins participating in 15s, with each team puttting 15 players on the field at a time. This is Union rules, similar to those seen in competitions such as Major League Rugby, Super Rugby, and the Rugby World Cup. The game consists of two 40 minute halves. The club plays both an A side, a more experienced and top level team, as well as a B side for developing and new players. This format continues through the fall semester into the spring. In the Spring, towards the end of the school year, the club participates in 7s, which consists of 7 players a side. Each half lasts 7 minutes.

What are the dues for this club team?
Membership dues are $500 for one academic year, as well as an additional $45 for USA rugby membership. The club fee covers all dues for the year from travel, kit, equipment, and team meals. If this is an issue, the club offers other ways to help pay dues. Contact the club treasurer for more info.

When is your season? Do you practice in the off-season?
The season officially starts a few weeks after school starts. 15s season begins in the fall and continues through the spring semester. Towards the end of the spring semester, 7s season starts and can last into the summer, depending on how well the team does at the tournaments. The team practices the whole school year, even when there are breaks in the game schedule.

Do you need to have experience to join?
No experience is needed to join BU Rugby. Our coaching staff has a long history and experience both as players and coaches. They are accustomed to teaching the basic fundamentals to new players as well as high level skills for experienced players. New players are given the opportunity for one-on-one development by the coaches as well as experienced players.
