Swinging between Accretion and Rotation-powered
States in Millisecond Binary Pulsars

The existence of an intermediary state in the evolution of millisecond binary pulsars has often been theorized, but no conclusive evidence of the existence of such a state had been provided until the INTEGRAL observations of M28 on March 28, 2013. Papitto, et al., use the observations of INTEGRAL and the archival Chandra images taken in the past decade to provide evidence of this
intermediary state, in which millisecond binary pulsars swing from accretionpowered (X-ray) and rotation-powered (radio) states within a short time frame (~yr).

Electromagnetic Duality Symmetry and Conservation of Helicity for Macroscopic Maxwell’s Equation

According to Nother’s theorem, any continuous symmetry of a non-dissipative system give rise to a conservative quantity. In this presentation, I will review the paper by Fernandez-Corbaton et al. that shows the link between electromagnetic
duality symmetry and conservation of helicity, and electromagnetic duality symmetry, broken in the microscopic Maxwell’s equation, can be restored for macroscopic Maxwell’s equation. The restoration of this symmetry is independent of geometry.
