|Description||Sounds of Science: Using Sound to Represent Physical Phenomena: Harmony of the Spheres to the Hydrogen Atom|
Electronic sound generation allows an alternative to visual representation of scientific phenomena and data. While graphs, plots and other visual means dominate our presentation of phusical phenomena and scientific results, and most likely always will, sounds engage us in a different way. Here we explore methods for relating sounds to physical phenomena. Using Mathematica as the base platform, a simple audio lexicon will be presented and inherent limitations discussed. The generated sounds can be used either as standalone audio representations or as enhancements to visual presentations. At times the effort of producing a sound representation in itself forces a different perspective of the physical phenomena. In addition, sound representations generated directly from physical processes, primarily astronomical sources, rather thatn computer models will also be presented.
