|Description||The Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University will feature a selection of oil paintings by contemporary Texas artist, Sedrick Huckaby in Gallery I beginning September 11. Guided by his family and faith, Huckaby's artistic vision tells the story of his connections with his family members, including his grandmother who recently passed away. Many of his portraits include backgrounds of draped quilts that would eventually become the real subjects of his large paintings and the messengers of his stories. Using thick, impasto paint, and oversized canvases, Huckaby transforms the humble quilt into a heroic symbol of the power of tradition and faith. A presentation by Sedrick Huckaby, sponsored by the Allbritton Art Institute, will be in room 149 of the Hooper-Schaefer Fine Arts building on October 12, 2012, from 1:25-2:30pm. A gallery talk and reception for Huckaby will be held at the Martin Museum of Art on October 12, from 5:30-7pm. As the first of our series, “Up Close at MMoA", the museum will host a lunch and book signing with Dr. Diana Garland, Dean of Baylor School of Social Work and author of "Sacred Stories of Ordinary Families: Living the Faith in Daily Life" on Monday, October 1, 12:05-12:55pm. Her book is part of the “Family and Faith Series”, which explores the relationship between families and the spiritual life. Seating is limited to 40 and reservations are required as there will be a complimentary box lunch. For reservations, please call (254) 710-6390.|
In Gallery II, the Martin Museum of Art will host a photography exhibition by Keith Carter. A lyrical meditation on the joys, wonders, and anxieties of childhood, Fireflies brings us back to the small truths so often pushed aside or forgotten, as we become adults. Informed by Carter’s own imagination-filled days spent playing in early boyhood haunts, these images allow us all to once again inhabit the stories, dreams, and make-believe worlds that children conjure. Courtesy of the Wittliff Collections at Texas State University-San Marcos, this exhibition presents over 20 images from Carter's 2009 monograph published by the University of Texas Press. A presentation by Keith Carter, sponsored by the Baylor Fine Arts photography department, entitled Imagining Paradise, will be held in room 149 on September 13, 2012, from 4:15-5:15pm. A gallery talk and reception for Carter will be held at the Martin Museum of Art on September 13, from 5:30-7pm.
The exhibitions will run September 11 – November 11, 2012. All events are free and the public is cordially invited.
