LocationMemorial Chapel (Memorial Residence Hall, Honors Residential College)
DescriptionAlthough the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at King's College, Cambridge, dates from 1918, it was modeled after a service originating in Cornwall four decades before. Edward White Benson had been named Bishop of Truro, charged with overseeing the building of the new cathedral there. At ten o'clock on Christmas eve in 1880, he held a service featuring nine "lessons" drawn from Scripture interspersed with Christmas carols. These nine "lessons" trace the biblical narrative from Eden to Christ's birth, from brokenness to hopeful joy. Participants are immersed in the story and find themselves once again waiting with expectation.
