LLCRS13 Exploring the Lenses of Barbara Kingsolver’s The Poisonwood Bible

DateJanuary 16 - February 27, 2018
LocationFirst Presbyterian Church
DescriptionThe Poisonwood Bible is Barbara Kingsolver's epic novel chronicling the lives of a God-fearing missionary and his family as he takes them into the Congo in 1959. Through the distinct voices of the characters, Kingsolver explores the female family role, the political mayhem of postcolonial Africa, the intricacies of the Kulangan culture, and the ironies of evangelical commitment. Lifelong Learner Diane Hamilton will focus on Kingsolver's purposeful development of her characters through symbolism, humor, and sardonic outcomes as each embraces enlightenment and reconciliation through tragedy. For the first meeting, you should read "Book One: Genesis" through the end of Adah Price's first part in "The Revelation,” (about 140 pgs)
