A Fragile Trust: Documentary Viewing with Q&A
Date | February 24, 2015 |
Time | 6:00 - 8:00 pm |
Location | Marrs-McLean Science 101 |
Description | A Fragile Trust, tells the story of the biggest plagiarism scandal in the history of The New York Times. Professor Macarena Hernández, now the Fred Hartman Distinguished Professor of Journalism at Baylor, plays a major role in the documentary. As the Rio Grande Valley bureau chief of the San Antonio Express-News, Hernández wrote an article that appeared in the Express-News about a soldier missing in Iraq. Times reporter Jason Blair plagiarized that article, and once that revelation became public, the magnitude of his long history of plagiarism became a national news story in itself. At the time, the publisher of The New York Times called the scandal ''a low point in the 152-year history of the newspaper" and ''a huge black eye.'' There will be a Q&A after the screening with Hernández and Dr. Sara Stone, chair of the department of Journalism, Public Relations and New Media. |
