DescriptionIt
is easy to assume that in times of crisis disparate groups across the
country will abandoned their differences and band together for the good
of the nation. But
is national unity during a crisis automatic? In a lecture on September
24, 2014, Brendan Miniter, the director of historical scholarship at
the George W. Bush Presidential Center, examines the historical record
in the months surrounding 9/11 and offers insights into how the country
went from a disputed election in November 2000 to a willingness to stand
united in September 2001. The lecture will consider how principled
leadership, a sense of national purpose, and policies that encouraged
civic engagement might have helped unite the country. The lecture will
compare the period surrounding 9/11 to other critical periods in
American history when the country faced a crisis.
