HIGGS HISTORY: The fruitful interplay between particle phases and field gauges
Jay Dittmann’s excellent colloquium convinced us that the Higgs has been found. Later in the term we will have lectures on the subject from particle theorists. However there are many insights into gauge field theory which come from simple quantum mechanics, quantum optics and superconductivity. Studying these examples will help us to better understand some key points such as local phase invariance, symmetry breaking and mass generation.
