Description | A booksigning event will be held with authors Calvin Smith and David Lintz to celebrate the release of their book, A History of the Waco Mammoth Site: In Pursuit of a National Monument. The event will take place at 6 PM on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at the Waco Mammoth National Monument, 6220 Steinbeck Bend Dr, Waco, TX 76708.
The book discusses how the Waco Mammoth Site represents a certain kind of rare breakthrough in paleontology, leading Waco to become one of the world's most treasured ancient proboscidean sites. The book details the journey of the Waco Mammoth Site, from the initial landmark discovery in 1978 to subsequent excavations and becoming a part of the National Park Service in 2015.
Authors Calvin Smith and David Lintz have played pivotal roles in the development of the site through the years. David Lintz was part of the early excavation and investigation team at the site, and Calvin Smith reopened the site in 1984 after work was halted, helping to expose sixteen
specimens.
The book-signing event taking place on April 27, 2023, will include an author introduction, author reading, meet and greet, book-signing and closing remarks. The event is free and open to the public and light refreshments will be provided. The event is brought in collaboration between the Waco Mammoth Foundation and partners at the City of Waco, the National Park Service and the Mayborn Museum.
