Patience is the sixth of fourteen operatic collaborations between composer Arthur Sullivan and librettist W. S. Gilbert. Premiered on April 23, 1881, the operetta is a playful satire on fads, fashion, superficiality, vanity, pretentiousness, and romantic love. While the work originally satirized the English aesthetic movement of the 1870s and ’80s, Baylor Opera Theatre’s production presents an updated concept, setting the drama in an Every Town, USA college campus coffee shop, gently poking fun at the fashion and culture of the Hippie movement of the late 1960s and early ’70s.
