Entering Holy Week Prayer Service
|Date||April 11, 2022|
|Time||5:00 - 6:30 pm|
|Location||Armstrong Browning Library|
|Description||Entering Holy Week|
You are invited to join us on Monday, April 11 at 5:00 pm, at Armstrong Browning Library, for a prayer service as we enter Holy Week and the celebration of Easter.
We will be joined by the choirs of St Peter's Catholic Student Center. We will pray and sing solemn sacred songs appropriate for the most sacred week of the Christian calendar, a week when we journey with Jesus to the Cross on Holy Friday, and to His glorious resurrection on Easter Sunday.
The choir will sing a beautiful and dramatic choral setting of a repentance prayer in the Psalms, the Miserere by Gregorio Allegri.
The work itself is a sublime nine-voice setting of Psalm 51: Miserere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misercordiuam tuam (‘Have mercy upon me, O God, after Thy great goodness’). As you listen to the heavenly sound of each interweaving voice, we hope that our hearts will moved to pray, with Christ at our side, this moving psalm that a penitent King David sang and prayed after being confronted by the prophet Nathan.
There's a story that when Mozart was a teenager, he once heard Allegri's Miserere being performed in the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The precocious young composer apparently scurried home and wrote down the entire work from memory, to the astonishment of the Pope and the musicians of the chapel.
We hope you will join us - Again, Monday, April 11 at 5:00 pm, at Armstrong Browning Library.
