Quantum Mechanics in Semiconductor Heterostructures and Devices

In this talk, I will discuss how several basic concepts of quantum mechanics, such as wave-function, tunneling, quantization of energy, transition rate, and their roles are manifested in advanced semiconductor heterostructures and devices. These devices include tunneling diodes, quantum cascade lasers, interband cascade lasers, type-II superlattice detectors, as well as photovoltaic cells for energy conversion. They are designed based on quantum mechanics and implemented by advanced growth technologies such as molecular beam epitaxy. I will give an overview of these semiconductor quantum devices in addition to connecting them to basic concepts of quantum mechanics.
