Description | In April 1996 Baylor held its first official dance on campus. Although there was never an official written policy on the books forbidding dance, it was considered off-limits for student organizations due to the university’s close ties to the Southern Baptist Convention. It was understood that if an organization wanted to hold a dance event it would need to be off campus. At the time that the “policy” was reversed the current president, Robert B. Sloan Jr. remarked that because dancing had always been included in university theatre productions and in cheer team routines, it was hypocritical to discourage it elsewhere on campus. And so the end of Spring 1996’s Diadeloso festivities were celebrated along Fifth Street with the first dance in Baylor University’s 151 year history. In celebration of Footloose going up in the same year as this anniversary we invite you to join us for some fun '80s dancing outside the SUB! |
