Description | Sara MacDonald and Barry Craig will be discussing their new book on the comic films of the Coen Brothers, The Coen Brothers and the Comedy of Democracy (2019). They will speak in particular about the film, Hail Caesar! As they write in the preface to their book, the Coen brothers’ comedies do not merely entertain, but illustrate “individual freedom, equality, recognition of the rights of others, and individual sacrifice rooted in love of one another.” As such, they offer “hope in a modern democratic society for justice and human fulfillment.” Sara MacDonald is professor of political science and philosophy at Huron University and Barry Craig is president at Huron University. They have written numerous articles and books in philosophy, political theory, and literature and film, most recently Fate and Freedom in the Novels of David Adams Richards (2017), Recollecting Dante’s Divine Comedy in the Novels of Mark Helprin (2015), and Recovering Hegel from the Critique of Leo Strauss: The Virtues of Modernity (2014). |
