With the rapid global spread of digital and social media, people are reaching out across historical boundaries to advance freedom, resist oppression, and promote the dignity of all human beings. We are all aware of some of the many ways in which technologies such as digital video, crowd mapping and mobile media are helping ordinary people to challenge oppression, share information, and extend a hand of compassion to others across boundaries of culture and geography. These are not just a few isolated incidents, but a broad trend that offers hope for a greater shared commitment to the dream of universal human rights.
