Pion-pion Scattering From First Principles

As lattice QCD continues to extend its reach, scattering simulations are now becoming feasible. In October 2014, the Hadron Spectrum collaboration published results for a simulation of elastic pion-pion scattering in the rho channel. Using Luschers method, this finite volume spectrum can be used to extract the infinite volume phase shift. The resonant behavior is clearly evident when the phase shift is fit to a Breit-Wigner. This is not the end of the story, though! The simulation was run with unphysically-large quark masses, so connection with experimental results requires a model. In this seminar, we present our use of Chiral Perturbation Theory to connect the Hadron Spectrum simulation with experimental results.
