2012 Fall Seminar Series - Dr. Ian Hutchinson (Plasma dust grain interactions: real calculations, not just heuristics)

DateOctober 25, 2012Time3:00 - 4:00 pm
LocationBaylor Science Building, Room: E 231
Description

To go beyond rather approximate heuristic treatments of plasma dust grain interactions requires kinetic-ion treatments in 5 or 6 phase-space dimensions. This talk will explain the extent to which simplified approaches can or can't provide reliable answers, and how full-scale non-linear calculations using the PIC approach work, including what their challenges are. Recent results will be described, including: comparisons with Linear Response calculations of the wake potential demonstrating the importance of non-linear effects, multiple-grain simulations that provide for the first time rigorous values for the intergrain forces, and investigations of dust particle wakes at low Mach number.
