DescriptionTalk Title: Behind the Pearly Gates: Coordination Dynamics within Angel Investor Networks

Research on coordination has primarily focused on organizations possessing elements of bureaucratic structure, yet many newer organizational forms lack traditional features such as hierarchical control. These organizations remain poorly understood. We explore one such organizational form, angel investor networks. We examine how eight U.S.-based angel investor networks coordinate the activities of a diverse array of voluntary members in the absence of conventional organizational structures. We identify a tool kit of subtle cues and nudges that attempt to delicately balance the autonomy of angels with the need to accomplish crucial tasks. Our findings illuminate the cyclical and fluid process of coordination, organizing, and survival in organizations that lack taken-for-granted structures.
