As Ernest Boyer argued (1990), teaching is a form of scholarship, since an important aspect of knowing is fostering communities with shared language and intellectual commitments. But teaching is also a scholarly activity in that it ought to be critically evaluated and guided by evidence, in pursuit of effective methods. As scholars in their disciplines, teachers invested in student learning, and practitioners with daily access to inexpensive "laboratories" (i.e., classrooms), faculty are well-suited to apply research methods to the analysis of teaching and learning, but few do. This panel discussion, featuring Baylor faculty involved in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), will identify the types of SoTL, share ideas for turning pedagogical questions into research projects, explore presentation and publication venues, and address ways to integrate SoTL into one's professional identity.
