SET - Strategies for Teaching and Engaging First-Generation College Students

In the fall of 2017, first-generation college students made up 16.9% of the student body at Baylor. First-generation college students often struggle with the transition to college and do not have immediate family members with college-knowledge to help answer their questions. First-generation college students are retained at a lower rate, graduate at lower rates, and carry lower overall GPAs compared to continuing-generation college students. This session will define what a first-generation college student is and present some common issues that first-generation college students struggle with including, Imposter Syndrome, Survivor’s Guilt, Sense of Belonging, Mattering, and lack of Social Capital. We will also cover ways to actively address these issues through mentoring, story sharing, affinity groups, self-advocacy, and relationship building.
