"Orbital Debris and Breaking Cognitive Biases"

Abstract: The growth of orbital debris is being hampered by the lack of commitment by spacefaring countries to comply with debris mitigation guidelines and execute debris remediation missions. However, the root cause for this situation is due to lack of risk awareness related to orbital debris hazards. The current collision threat from space debris is largely a function of the number of pieces of space debris but the future threat is more a function of the mass in Earth orbit of space debris. An ongoing space experiment created to help expose and break unstated cognitive biases is reviewed and ramifications of the space experiment are presented. Unlike what you may have been told in you statistics classes – “the mean is meaningless.”

BIO: Dr. Darren McKnight is currently Technical Director for Integrity Applications, Inc. (IAI) based in Chantilly, Virginia. He leads teams to develop creative solutions across widely disparate domains: space systems, renewable energy, predictive awareness for infectious disease outbreaks, bioterrorism, orbital debris, workforce productivity, and youth soccer training. Before coming to IAI, Darren served as Senior Vice President and Director of Science and Technology Strategy at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). Dr. McKnight also served as Assistant Professor of Physics at the Air Force Academy from 1986-1990. Dr. McKnight received his Bachelor’s Degree from the United States Air Force Academy in Engineering Sciences, his Master’s Degree from the University of New Mexico in Mechanical Engineering, and his Doctorate from the University of Colorado in Aerospace Engineering Sciences.
