Instructors occasionally encounter incivility in the classroom. Incivility includes rudeness, confrontation, tardiness, lack of interest, and other ways students demonstrate resistance to the shared process of learning. Despite these challenges and general changes in classroom environments and behavior norms at universities, instructors can create a positive, civil environment, for the sake of all students. This SET will discuss theories of behavior and instructional delivery that apply to civility, and you will walk away with techniques that you can immediately apply to the classroom.
