Lamar Starks

Center for Professional Selling

Headshot of Lamar Starks

Growing up in Dalton, GA, the Carpet Capital of the World, Lamar Starks went to work for Galaxy Carpet Mills in territory sales, after earning a BA in Economics from the University of Georgia. “I always I knew I wanted to go into sales and was not sure how economics would be useful. I now marvel at how well micro and macroeconomic acumen have helped me.” His career has come full circle, from flooring to the food service industry, then medical device sales, and now back to flooring.

At Shaw Industries, Lamar has developed and launched an Inside Sales program that would supplement and support field sales efforts. “My first nine years was spent building the Inside Sales program. I was then promoted to my current role, Residential Sales Training Manager, where I am responsible for the content, curriculum, and delivery of our Sales Training program.”

Lamar considers his greatest accomplishment professionally to be transforming the sales training program to a more progressive model. “The key components of the program include CORE training at the Corporate headquarters, then a field apprentice role where trainees can gain practical application of their training, before being assigned a territory.”

Aside from his career, Lamar is a proud husband of 28 years and proud father to two fine young men. Together, they engage and serve in their church and community. Lamar has served as the Board Chairman for the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is also a certified John Maxwell Coach. In all his professional and personal associations, he looks to Train, Coach, Lead, and Serve.

Lamar urges ProSales students to know clearly why they want to be in sales. “When interviewing companies to sell for, look for culture first and then clearly articulate why you want to be in sales. Be transparent about your motivations!”
