Secretary General of UNCTAD Kicks Off Free Trade in the Americas Conference at Baylor UniversityOct. 7, 2005
Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, secretary general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), gave a keynote address last night to open the Free Trade in the Americas Conference on the Baylor Campus.
Officials and scholars from Canada, Latin America and the United States are attending the conference to discuss the development and status of trade agreements within the Western Hemisphere.
Supachai discussed the proliferation of regional and bi-lateral agreements throughout the world, which he said number about 300. He contends that these agreements are "good practice" for countries who must ultimately be working toward multi-lateral trade on a global, rather than regional, scale.
Supachai transitioned from director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) to his new role leading UNCTAD last month.
The Free Trade in the Americas Conference continues throughout the day on Friday, October 7 at Baylor's Hankamer School of Business. Visit www.baylor.edu/freetrade for more information.
