Hankamer Alumni Featured on New HGTV Reality Show

By Giselle Villalpando

Chip and Joanna Gaines, owners of Magnolia Homes in Waco, Texas, and Baylor University alumni, are filming a reality show on HGTV called "Fixer Upper."

After they were married, Chip, a Hankamer School of Business alumnus, began renovating and flipping properties on Third Street in Waco for Baylor students, and Joanna opened a furniture boutique named Magnolia. Joanna took a break from her boutique, and she decided to merge her creative interior design and Chip's real estate business to form Magnolia Homes.

The TV show, "Fixer Upper," was a result of a production company scouting Joanna's design blog, the Magnolia Mom. The production company, High Noon Entertainment, pitched a sizzle reel to HGTV, which ordered a pilot episode that aired in May. HGTV picked up the show for 12 episodes, currently being filmed, which will premiere March 2014.

Joanna was surprised this opportunity presented itself.

"At first, we didn't know what to think, but we realized what an amazing opportunity was before us," Joanna said. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and we are having fun with it."

The show has been rewarding to the Gaines couple, who is in the process of filming the first season.

"The show has exposed our business to a national level and brought significant traffic to Joanna's blog," said Chip. "On a local level, it increased the amount of remodels and renovations we take on."

Chip recalls the most rewarding part of starting his business.

"The best part is watching a property that was completely run down come back to life," Chip said. "We love the renovation process and giving these homes their character and charm back."

Chip's business background from Hankamer has helped him in his business endeavors.

"The professors were informative and insightful," Chip said. "My education at Hankamer gave me a good foundation for what has now become a 15-year business career."

He has some helpful advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.

"Figure out your strengths and passion and move towards a goal where those two can intersect," Chip said.

High Noon Entertainment is looking for homebuyers in the Waco area to be featured on "Fixer Upper." The homebuyer must contribute to most of the costs of the renovation. If interested, email for more information.
