British Diplomatic Service, retired
Roland Smith was a member of the British Diplomatic Service from 1967 to 2002, and served twice in Moscow during the Soviet period. His last three positions were as Deputy Ambassador to NATO (1992-5), Director for International Security in the Foreign Office (1995-8), and Ambassador to Ukraine (1999-2002).
Mr. Smith earned a degree in Modern Language with honors at Oxford University in 1965 and was awarded the CMG in 1994. During 2004-2018, he ran the Wakefield and Tetley Trust (a charitable foundation). He has been a member of the Council of Management of the Keston Institute since his retirement from the Diplomatic Service in 2002. For the last few years he has been Vice-Chairman of the Council.
