Business Ethics & Leadership

Robert studied mathematics at Cambridge in England and completed a doctorate in operator algebras and conformal field theory. He then worked for several years in the sonar industry working on algorithm development and software integration for mine hunting sonars and unmanned underwater vehicles. In 2006, he left industry to join the Dominican religious order. He completed a Sacred Theology Baccalaureate at Blackfriars, Oxford in 2012, and was subsequently ordained to the priesthood. He then worked for a couple of years in pastoral ministry at Edinburgh University, but went back to full-time study in 2014. Since 2016 he has been working on his doctorate in philosophy at Baylor University, focusing on the philosophy of physics and the ideas of the medieval Dominican theologian St. Thomas Aquinas. In religious life, Fr. Robert has continued to make use of his software background. On a practical level, he was the network administrator for Blackfriars Hall during his time in Oxford, and he also developed the web application which Blackfriars uses to organize student records. Among his most recent software projects is the development of a search engine plugin for the iAquinas.com website. On a philosophical level, he is interested in artificial intelligence and its limitations, and has recently published an online article arguing that conventional computers will never be genuinely intelligent.
