George Montañez

George D. Montañez is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA and a former data scientist for Microsoft who worked on automated machine learning systems (Auto ML). He was awarded a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University in machine learning in 2017 under Dr. Cosma Shalizi, focusing on developing a framework for understanding why machine learning works from an abstract and unified search perspective. His research has been recognized with several awards including the IEEE SMC 2017 Best Student Paper award, the IJCNN 2017 INNS/Intel Best Student Paper award, the IJCNN 2017 Best Poster award and the CIKM 2014 Best Paper award. He is a former NSF Graduate Research fellow and Ford Foundation Predoctoral fellow.

Montañez received his bachelor's in Computer Science from the University of California Riverside and his master's in Computer Science from Baylor University. He is the proud father of three children.
