Biology Graduate Events

The Biology Department occasionally hosts events for the graduate students and their families to gather and get to know one another outside of an academic setting to foster a sense of community. This page shows the various activities and sites we visit and when the next scheduled outing is. Be sure to check in for any updates!

Cameron Park Zoo

The Cameron Park Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals and is a great educational experience as well as an excellent way to spend the day outside. Take pictures! Learn about the animals and their natural habitats! Learn about the enrichment activities the zoo provides for them! Learn more about the conservation efforts and practices for the wild populations of the animals on exhibit!

Mayborn Museum Complex

The Mayborn Museum Complex is full of interesting exhibits and collections for you walk through and learn more about. We highly recommend the Natural and Cultural History Exhibits, and the Biosciences Collection, but there is much more to offer. The mayborn also offers a Cultural Collection, a Geoscience Collection, the historic Village, and the Jeanes Discovery Center which includes Play Waco for the children! Don't forget the special exhibits, which are only available for a limited time. These exhibits currently include Founding to Future: Bright Lights of Baylor University, New Views of the Dust Bowl, and another one for the kids, Dinosaur Train: The Traveling Exhibit!

Lake Waco Wetlands

The Lake Waco Wetlands is teeming with all kinds of life from graceful animals like the Great Egret to plants with silly names like the Duck Potato. The Wetlands are also home to the Research and Education center where the Baylor biology Department holds its CRASR classes! Let's take a walk, take a deep breath of fresh air, and be sure to bring a camera! With all that this ecosystem has to offer, you'll want to take pictures, and you may even take one that you want to submit to the Department's Art Competition!

Waco Mammoth National Monument

Long ago in the Pleistocene Epoch, the Waco area was much different than it is today. Some of the animals that roamed the area back then have their skeletal remains on display at this center of Paleontological and Geological research. Can you dig it? Learn about the history of the area as well as the research being conducted. Marvel at the size of the creatures that once roamed the earth. Or just take the break to enjoy your time outside the lab or classroom!

Carleen Bright Arboretum

The Carleen Bright Arboretum is a great place to sit down for a picnic, take an educational tour, or both! Bring your families and hang out with your colleagues as you meander about the gardens and butterfly hub!

Field Day

Have a field day! This day is just a time to have a relaxing day outdoors as well as some casual competition with a few games. Lab against lab. EEO versus CMHD. The combinations are endless and endlessly fun for all!

Welcome Week Lunch

Sit down, take a break, and have a meal with your fellow graduate students, faculty, and staff. Get to know people outside of your lab or specialization. Network, make friends, and just have fun!

Departmental Social

Grab a quick treat and socialize with others in the Department. These will be less formal than the lunches and allow for easier mobility so that everyone can meet and talk to more people.
