Discovery Channel Star Follows Baylor Faculty and Students in 'Expedition Unknown' Season 10 Finale

WACO, Texas (Aug. 29, 2022) - Research led by Baylor University faculty and students will be explored on the national stage as they share their findings from the San Giuliano Archaeological Research Project during a Season 10 episode of the popular primetime Discovery adventure series "Expedition Unknown," which premieres Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. CST on Discovery.

Dr. Darren J.N. Middleton Appointed Director of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core

The Honors College is excited to announce that Dr. Darren J.N. Middleton, John F. Weatherly Professor of Religion at Texas Christian University, has accepted appointment as Director of the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core. In addition to his administrative role, he will hold a tenured faculty appointment in the BIC as Professor of Literature and Theology. He is set to begin service effective August 1.

Baylor Religion Professor Receives Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to South Korea

WACO, Texas (May 12, 2022) – Baylor University Honors College faculty member Candi K. Cann, Ph.D., associate professor of religion in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC), has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to South Korea, a prestigious and competitive fellowship of the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Three Baylor Students Named Truman Finalists

Three Honors College juniors, including BIC student Veronica Penales, were named finalists for the Truman Scholarship, announced this month by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Awarded each year to recognize college juniors who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, and a commitment to public service, the Truman Scholarship honors the legacy of President Harry S. Truman and offers $30,000 for graduate study to one student from each state.

From essays to board games: BIC Leadership Council unites professors, students

The BIC Leadership Council is a combined student advisory group of 16 that serves as a liaison between the BIC student body, faculty and alumni. It is made up of three committees: external relations, academic and events. The Leadership Council seeks to foster community by creating opportunities for all those who participate in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core to engage with one another — from bringing in alumni to speak about their career field, to hosting coffee hours with professors, to putting together board game nights for students.

Each year the BIC invites one of our outstanding alumni to return for Homecoming and share a lecture with our students, faculty, and alumni. This year we are thrilled to welcome back Dr. James Saucedo (’03), an orthopedic surgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital and a member of the BIC Alumni Advisory Board, as our distinguished guest. We recently interviewed Dr. Saucedo to learn more about his journey since graduating from Baylor. Alex Perry, Baylor and BIC alumna, is making her official debut into the publishing world with her new book, “Pighearted,” about a boy and a pig who become best friends.“Pighearted” will make its debut on Oct. 26 and will be available for order. Check Baylor Lariat article to learn more.

Honors College Alumni Spotlight: Dr. Ebony L. Lang

As Giving Day approaches we want to thank our many alumni who continue to support the Honors College through both their time and generous giving. One such dedicated alumnus is Dr. Lang (B.A. Social Work 2004, BIC)! After receiving her BA and MA from Baylor in Social Work, Dr. Lang went on to pursue her Ph.D. in Social Work as well as her Masters of Divinity. Dr. Lang currently serves as the director of Tarleton State University’s BSW program. In her Alumni Spotlight, Dr. Lang reflects on the impact of many of her Baylor professors on her college experience and on her teaching practices now. Sic‘em, Dr. Lang!

Celebrating 25 Years of BIC

Baylor's commitment to a transformational undergraduate education means providing many academic options. Among them is one located under the umbrella of the Honors College that stands apart due to its focus on intentionally stitching together the disparate threads of a student’s core classes and their chosen discipline. This program is the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC) and is constructed to provide a comprehensive, coherent, interdisciplinary education that helps students see connections between fields of study that are sometimes obscured by disciplinary boundaries.
