Scholarship: Ruth Belew Scholarship

Information: The Ruth M. Belew Endowed Scholarship Fund in Theatre Arts was established in 2015 by John S. Belew of McGregor, Texas, in memory of his wife, Ruth M. Belew.

Ruth was born July 31, 1921, in Waco, Texas to James and Edith McAtee, Sr. She earned a B.S. degree from the University of Texas in 1942. She became a member of the Baylor University theater faculty in 1972, teaching movement to scores of theatre majors until her retirement in 1992. In addition to her formal teaching duties in the theater department, she contributed to Baylor's Honors Program. She was an active member of the Baylor Round Table and the Waco Literary Club, having served as president of each. She and her husband, John, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary June 3, 2014. Ruth was a member of Seventh and James Baptist Church.

John Belew earned a B.S. degree from Baylor University in 1941, a M.S. degree from Wichita State University and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Wisconsin. He is provost emeritus of Baylor. He also served as the first Jo Murphy Chair in International Education, vice president and provost, executive vice president for academic affairs, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of chemistry.

Criteria:  For Undergraduate students in the Theater Arts department.

Minimum GPA: The University requires a minimum GPA of 2.50; however, individual departments may have more stringent academic requirements.
