WACO, Texas (May 30, 2013) - When their schools are near fast-food restaurants, black and Hispanic adolescents are more likely to be overweight and receive less benefit from exercise than Asian or white students, according to a study published in the current issue of Journal of Public Policy & Marketing. The study underscores the importance of understanding how adolescents respond to fast-food availability near school.

These words of former Baylor University President Samuel Palmer Brooks will be in the minds of Baylor students as they mark the completion of their studies during spring commencement exercises on May 17-18. Baylor President Ken Starr will preside over the three ceremonies, which will be held at the Ferrell Center, 1900 S. University Parks Drive.

A recent Baylor University research study has shed new light on the diet and food acquisition strategies of some the earliest human ancestors in Africa.

Beginning around two million years ago, early stone tool-making humans, known scientifically as Oldowan hominin, started to exhibit a number of physiological and ecological adaptations that required greater daily energy expenditures, including an increase in brain and body size, heavier investment in their offspring and significant home-range expansion. Demonstrating how these early humans acquired the extra energy they needed to sustain these shifts has been the subject of much debate among researchers.

The latest Fulbright recipients bring the number of Baylor students and/or graduates who have received the prestigious honor since 2001 to 36.

Salter received the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) and will spend the 2013-2014 academic year teaching English at a university in Moldova.

WACO, Texas (May 3, 2013) - Baylor University alumna and current graduate student Leigh Ann Ganzar of Littleton, Colo., is one of four Baylor students and recent graduates who have been selected to receive the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. A 2011 Baylor biology graduate and current master's candidate in community health education (MPH), Ganzar received the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) and will spend the 2013-2014 academic year in Brazil teaching English to university students.

WACO, Texas (May 3, 2013) - Taylor Kohn, a senior University Scholar from Wichita, Kan., is one of four Baylor students and recent graduates who have been selected to receive the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. As a Fulbright recipient, Kohn will pursue his master of philosophy degree in instrumentation at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.
