Marco Franco, a doctoral candidate in environmental science, received the 2020 Colgate-Palmolive Award for Student Research Training in Alternative Methods from the Society of Toxicology. The award provides graduate students with funding to enhance research training using in vitro methods or alternative techniques to replace the use of animals in toxicological research.

An Arts & Sciences student won $100,000 worth of tuition money in a contest broadcast during halftime of the SEC Championship football game on Dec. 7. Senior biochemistry major Andrea Gathercole was one of 20 students taking part nationwide in the Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway — which awards that amount of money to students who win televised competitions to throw the most footballs into an oversized Dr Pepper can.

Gabbi Mucerino, a senior political science major, is the first student in Baylor history to be awarded a prestigious Charles B. Rangel Graduate Fellowship from the U.S. State Department. The fellowship supports extraordinary students who plan to pursue a career in foreign service.

Stephen Blake Allan, a senior studying mathematics and physics, is one of eight undergraduate students nationwide to receive a Trjitzinsky Award from the American Mathematical Society. The awards are given each year to deserving students to assist them in pursuit of careers in mathematics.

Junior biology major Anirudh Gothwal has reached a milestone not achieved by many undergraduates — contributing to a study published in a prestigious American medical journal. The study published in JAMA Oncology reveals a lack of racial and ethnic diversity in clinical trials for cancer drugs — a finding that raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of cancer drugs in some patients.
