Six Ways for Baylor Students to Get Active and Stay Fit

Did you know there is a correlation between physical activity and academic success in college? It’s a research-backed link that Van Smith-Davis, assistant director of Baylor Wellness, loves sharing with students.

“Students are here because of education—that’s the priority. There’s research I share with them that shows a correlation between physical activity and academic performance,” Smith-Davis says. “Students with a GPA of 3.5 and higher are three times more likely to work out than students below 3.5. Physical activity also improves memory and retention. It boosts the mood and reduces stress. I then ask students, ‘If you can take part in physical activity that is not only healthy and fun, but also improves your grades, why not do so?’”

Smith-Davis works to connect students with available Baylor fitness resources—and Baylor offers a wide array of resources and activities for students, with options that fit all interests, schedules and abilities. Which would your student most enjoy? Here are six ways for Baylor students to stay fit and active on campus.

1. McLane Student Life Center If you’ve heard your student mention the “slick,” he or she is talking about the McLane SLC (SLC = slick). The SLC’s more than 15,000 square-feet of space includes treadmills, weights, an indoor track, lap pool, racquetball, basketball and even rock climbing. Open during the school year until midnight, there’s something here for everyone.

2. Bear Trail This 2.25-mile track encircles campus, providing students a scenic outdoor track to run, walk or jog.

3. FitWell Program offers more than 50 Group exercises classes such as Yoga, Zumba, Bear Cycle, Barre, MMA/Boxing Conditioning, and more. The program also include the popular F45 training, a high intensity interval training program that takes 45 minutes from start to finish. For Spring 2019, cost for the FitWell Program is only $50 for entire semester. Classes are available between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. weekdays, so there’s something for every schedule.

4. Personal Trainers Students can work with certified personal trainers to build a workout plan unique to their own abilities and needs. It’s a great way for students to meet their goals and receive one-on-one guidance.

5. Intramurals Dozens of teams in 16 sports come together for competition, fun and friendship. Baylor’s intramural offerings are among the nation’s best.

6. Peer Nutrition Education A healthy diet is an important part of every student’s life, and amidst the hectic nature of a college schedule, it’s sometimes hard for students to make the best food choices. Baylor Peer Nutrition Education provides students with personalized consultations with senior-level Baylor nutrition students to help develop and implement healthy eating habits. The cost is $10 for 3 sessions.
