Implementation of New Grading Scale

Dear Baylor Faculty:

In fall 2011, the University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UUCC) began a process of studying the possibility of adding minus grades to Baylor's undergraduate grading scale. As most of you know, Baylor's undergraduate grading scale has included grades of B+ and C+, but not the corresponding grades of A-, B-, and C-. After studying the issue in depth, the UUCC then recommended to my office and to the Faculty Senate that the University move to a grading scale that includes minus grades. The Graduate Curriculum Committee and Student Senate also reviewed the proposal for a new grading scale. Making this change will provide greater flexibility for faculty as they assign student grades. In addition, the implementation of the new scale will provide greater consistency across the university since all undergraduate programs, the Graduate School, and Truett Seminary will now be using the same scale.

The change will take effect with the summer 2014 term. The website listed below provides additional information on the timeline for the various decisions related to the change. The site also includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) related to its implementation. The website will continue to be updated as the Grading Policy Implementation Team completes its work during the upcoming year.

If your department, school, or college intends to make any changes to prerequisites in light of this change, the necessary Electronic Course Action Requests need to be submitted as soon as possible. Any curriculum changes will need to be approved by all necessary parties by Monday, February 3, 2014, in order for them to be effective with the summer 2014 term.
