Betty Ann Whitson

Woman of Distinction 1999-2000

Betty Ann Clark Whitson is a Dallas native, where she graduated from Highland Park High School in 1952. In 1955, she received a BA degree from Baylor University, graduating in just three years. She later earned her Master's Degree from Howard Payne University.

Betty Ann taught at Aledo High School, Covington High School and Howard Payne University. She also worked for the music department of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

She and her husband David, were serving on staff at Highland Baptist of Dallas, when they were appointed to the mission field. They served their entire careers in Tanzania, Africa.

Betty Ann's work consisted of teaching and training women in the churches of Tanzania. She served as the WMU Advisor in that East Africa country for ten years. Later she was the CO-director of Theological Education in Leadership Training at the Baptist seminary in Arusha, Tanzania.

During their years in Tanzania, they lived in four different cities, helped establish ten churches annually, and baptized as many as one thousand people a year.

Betty Ann is the mother of five children. She and David have four boys and one girl, three of these are Baylor graduates. The Whitson's have fourteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
