Sandra “Sandy” Lynn Sledge, B.S.Ed ’79
Sandra “Sandy” Lynn Sledge, B.S.Ed ’79, of Midland, TX, went home to her Heavenly Father Jan. 4, 2023. Sledge was born Jan. 5, 1957, in Alpine, TX, to Freddie (Sandlin) and Gordon Harmon. Sandy graduated from San Marcos High School in 1975 where she was the president of both the National Honor Society and the Future Teachers of America, the drum major of the marching band, elected most popular, Miss San Marcos High School and crowned homecoming queen. Sledge pursued her love of education by attending Baylor University where she earned a degree in education, made life-long friends, joined Kappa Kappa Gamma and met the love of her life, David.
After marrying David Aug. 11, 1979, they moved to Midland. Sledge taught speech and P.E. at Goddard Junior High and then the Hillander School where their two children, Shelley and Sam, would spend their elementary school days. During her 43 years in Midland, Sledge served on the boards of the Salvation Army, High Sky Children’s Ranch, National Kidney Foundation, Palmer Drug Abuse Program and the Boys and Girls Club. She also committed her time to PTAs, served as president of both the Lee High School volleyball and football booster clubs, ACT 9, a decade in the Junior League and a founding board member of the Rexanna’s Foundation for fighting lung cancer.
Sledge enjoyed spending time playing tennis, making quilts for all her favorite people, time at the lake, going to Hobby Lobby and Target, and countless hours spent at the beach with her toes in the sand. Eight years ago, when her first grandson was born, she became lovingly known as Cha Cha to her three favorite tiny humans, Silas, John David and Ella Claire. Sledge’s commitment to and love of her family never wavered. While Sledge leaves a legacy of joy and hard work, she also leaves an incredible legacy of faith in God and a life-long love and commitment to her wonderful husband of 43 years. She will be remembered for her resolute faith, seemingly endless energy, competitiveness, ever positive attitude and affinity for the biggest and brightest of everything — clothing, jewelry, decor and life.
