Mark Allen Newton serves as senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Lufkin, having previously held pastorates in San Marcos, San Antonio, McGregor and Chilton. He is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. From 2014 to 2015, he served as director of the church engagement program at Baylor.
Newton currently serves as a board member of Hospice in the Pines in Lufkin and previously served as a board member of Christian Women’s Job Corp in San Antonio and Meals on Wheels in Waco, vice president of the San Marcos Education Foundation and a member of the Board of Trustees for the Baptist Health System in San Antonio. He served on the Executive Board of the San Antonio Baptist Association and as chair of the Ethics Committee for the City of San Marcos.
AWARDS AND HONORS
Newton was named the City of San Marcos Citizen of the Year in 2013, was president of Leadership San Marcos from 2013 to 2014 and is an Honorary Alumnus of George W. Truett Theological Seminary.
A member of the Baylor Bear Foundation and Old Main Society, Newton also is a member of the Baylor University Development Council and the Baylor Presidents Club.
CHURCH/CHRISTIAN MISSION AFFILIATIONS
Newton and his wife Aurelia Northcutt Newton, BA '90, are members of First Baptist Church of Lufkin. He has served in a number of roles for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, including first vice president (2000-2001) and as a member of the State Missions Committee and the Committee on Convention Business. He also has served on the National Coordinating Council and Texas Governing Board of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, on the Board of the Alto Frio Baptist Camp and on the Ministerial Alliance in Lufkin, San Marcos, San Antonio and McGregor.
