Katie Jo Baumgardner Luningham earned her JD magna cum laude from Notre Dame Law School and is an attorney with Husch Blackwell’s Education Group, where she specializes in higher education litigation and regulatory compliance. Luningham recently accepted a clerkship with the Honorable Lisa Branch on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and will serve as a federal law clerk from April 2018 to September 2019.
Luningham is a member of the National Advisory Council for the Journal of College & University Law. She is also on the U.S. Senate Youth Program Alumni Association National Board, serving as the Liaison Officer to the Hearst Foundation. In addition, she is a member of the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA), and served as 2015 Girls Nation Vice Chairman.
AWARDS AND HONORS
Luningham was selected as the 2017 Alumni of the Year by the J.L. Weigand Jr. Notre Dame Legal Education Trust. She is a 2015 winner of the Burton Distinguished Legal Writing Award, administered by the U.S. Library of Congress. Luningham also won the ND Law First-Year Moot Court Tournament. Luningham graduated summa cum laude with Honors from Baylor in 2011, where she was a University Scholar. Upon entering Baylor, Luningham was a National Merit Scholar and a two-time Kansas Debate State Champion in high school.
A William Carey Crane Scholar during her studies at Baylor, Luningham has continued to support Baylor’s Institute for Faith and Learning and the Crane Scholars Program, serving as the 2016 Young Alumni Speaker at the Crane Scholar Retreat.
CHURCH/CHRISTIAN MISSION AFFILIATIONS
Luningham is an active member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition to regular attendance and involvement at Mt. Olive, her husband Justin Luningham, BA ’09, maintains his membership at First Baptist Church Arlington, Texas, where he is a lifelong member.
