State policymakers' attention to teacher quality -- an issue education research shows is essential to improving schooling outcomes for racial minority students -- is highly responsive to low graduation rates among white students, but not to low graduation rates among black students, according to a Baylor University study.

The Baylor University Board of Regents voted in July to begin study and architectural renderings associated with a new alumni event center at Baylor Stadium. The board also authorized fundraising to support construction of the center, which has an expected cost of $20 million.

This summer, during the 2013 International Clarinet Association conference in Assisi, Italy, students of Dr. Jun Qian, assistant professor of clarinet, were honored among some of the world's most talented.

The university opened the new 238,715-square-foot East Village Residential Community to its first students this fall. The twin residential facilities each house a thriving living-learning community of students and faculty and were named by a committee of faculty, staff and students to reflect the academic interests of their occupants and honor alumni who have excelled in these fields.

As Floyd Casey Stadium turns out the lights for the last time in November, another Baylor Athletic venue will be celebrating a silver anniversary.

Baylor President Ken Starr spent several days in Africa in July to get a first-hand look at the work being done by Baylor students through discipline-specific mission trips, study abroad and partnerships with missions groups like Buckner International.

On June 10, officials at L-3 Platform Integration in Waco and Baylor University announced the signing of a lease agreement to occupy 3,200 square feet of industrial space at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC) discovery park. L-3 Platform Integration will staff its new lease space in the BRIC with engineers who are already working directly with Baylor faculty researchers.

Two summers ago, Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty joined many of his teammates and other Baylor athletes on a mission trip to Kenya. The experience of serving with his fellow Bears underscored an important lesson.

Dr. Bryan W. Brooks, professor of environmental science and biomedical studies in Baylor University's College of Arts & Sciences and director of the environmental science graduate program and the environmental health science program, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Award to conduct research during the 2013-14 academic year at the University of Lethbridge in Canada.

Civics Engagement Camp helps students impact communities

In its latest move to expand its reach to potential ministerial students and meet the changing needs of congregations, Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary will open an extension campus in Austin in January 2014. Truett held an open house and information session Sept. 17 in Austin.

Recent Baylor University graduate Stephanie Allen of Lake Jackson, Texas, and current graduate student Austin Cook-Lindsay of San Angelo, Texas, have been named 2013-2014 Rotary Foundation Global Grant Scholars, a new program that provides $30,000 scholarships to support students' graduate-level academic studies in areas that relate to Rotary's areas of focus around the world.

As students across the nation headed back to school, more than a third of the 3 million Texas school children who qualify for federal free and reduced-price lunches at school began each day without a school breakfast. During the summer break, even fewer had access to federal Summer Meals Programs.
