Baylor Alumni BBQ Cook Off

during Green & Gold Weekend
Friday, April 21-Saturday, April 22, 2023

It's time to show off your grill skills! Sign up your team for this sizzling cook-off competition held at Bear Lawn, right outside of McLane Stadium. Amateur teams will vie for the top spots in Pork Ribs, Chicken Wings, Brisket, and People's Choice for Best Tailgate Dish. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded to each category and an overall Grand Champion will be crowned!

Stop by the BBQ Cook-Off on Saturday morning to taste and vote for your favorite tailgate dish in the People's Choice Award category! Grab your Baylor gameday accessories, such as BU pom-poms and sunglasses, and watch as our judges award Cook-Off prizes!

BBQ Cookoff teams will be comprised of 4 individuals. The team captain/main griller should register his/her name, completing all of the required fields, then fill in the remaining guest names to complete the team of 4. Please call Tess Jamerson, 254-709-6202, if you have any questions during registration. There will be no refund of entry fees.

Timeline
  • 9-10:45 a.m. – Guest Tasting*
  • 9:30-9:40 a.m. – Turn in Chicken Wings
  • 9:40-10 a.m. – Judging Chicken Wings
  • 10-10:10 a.m. – Turn in Ribs
  • 10:10-10:30 a.m. – Judging Ribs
  • 10:30-10:40 a.m. – Turn in Brisket
  • 10:40-11 a.m. – Judging Brisket
  • Post-Judging – Awards

*Guests are welcome to taste and vote for their favorite tailgate dish in the People's Choice Award category between 9 and 10:45 a.m.!

Rules & Regulations

Categories

  • Pork Ribs – Minimum of 4 ribs, spareribs, or baby back ribs.
  • Chicken Wings – Minimum of 8 chicken wings.
  • Brisket – Minimum of 4 slices (slices, burnt ends or both are encouraged).
  • People's Choice – How you serve it is up to you. There will be no judge turn in for this category; instead, this will be judged by fellow fans walking up and trying your best tailgate dish.

Check In & Spot Assignment
Contestants may park their smokers, check in at the Alumni Tailgate Tent, and receive their spot assignment on Friday, April 21 between 4-8 p.m. *If you would like to check in on Saturday, April 22, you can do so starting at 7 a.m. Teams are allowed one vehicle per assigned cooking spot. Additional vehicles can utilize the parking lot. Click here to view a map of the area.

Contestant
Contestants must be amateur competitors. The contestant will be referred to as “Griller”. BBQ Cookoff teams will be comprised of 4 individuals.

Equipment
Each Griller will supply all the equipment necessary for the preparation and cooking of their entry including a cooker. Cooker can ONLY be one of the following: gas, charcoal, pellet, or wood (no open pit fires). Crock pots and other electric appliances will be allowed as well. *Electricity will be provided.

Teams must have all equipment out of the area by 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 22.

Judging & Scoring

Judging
Each entry will be judged on Appearance, Taste/Flavor and Overall Impression. Entries should provide enough to feed 4 judges. Meat can be sauced or un-sauced.

Scoring
Scoring ranges from low of 2 to a high of 20 in increments of 1 point for each of the 3 categories. Any entry that is disqualified will receive a score of 0 for all three categories. The weighting factors for the point system are Appearance 1, Taste 1.5, and Overall Impression 2.

Disqualification
An entry can be disqualified for any of the following reasons:

  • There is anything foreign other than meat/sauce in container
  • The entry is turned in later than official designated time
  • Not cooking the appropriate meat
  • There is evidence of blood, such that the meat is uncooked
Prizes
  • Pork Ribs, Chicken Wings, Brisket
    • 1st Place – $400
    • 2nd Place – $200
    • 3rd Place – $100
  • People's Choice (Favorite Tailgate Dish, voted on via tickets for fan favorite)
    • 1st Place – $200
    • 2nd Place – $100
    • 3rd Place – $50
  • Grand Champion – $750

*The Grand Champion title will be the Griller with the most total points in all the categories. Pork ribs, chicken wings, brisket ONLY.

The gold star icon represents the Baylor BBQ Cook Off site where contestants will check in, receive their spot assignments, and final scoring/judging.
