Dennis O'Neal, Ph.D., P.E.

Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science

During a long career marked by remarkable achievement and service and what will be a tenure of 10 years as dean when he retires, Dr. O’Neal has brought distinction and increased visibility both to the School of Engineering and Computer Science and Baylor University.

A distinguished scholar of mechanical engineering and a community-building leader, Dr. O’Neal has played a pivotal role in growing the School of Engineering and Computer Science following his appointment as dean in August 2012. He has hired roughly half of the faculty members currently teaching in the School, and student enrollment and research activities have flourished as a result of his leadership across the School’s three departments of mechanical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and computer science. Of particular significance was the creation of Ph.D. programs in mechanical engineering and computer science under his guidance.

Before joining Baylor, Dr. O'Neal had over 30 years of experience in the mechanical engineering field and has taught HVAC, thermodynamics, heat transfer and engineering design, advising 40 master's and 18 doctoral students during his career. He served as associate dean of research in the Dwight Look College of Engineering and deputy director for the Texas Engineering Experiment Station at Texas A&M University. Prior to that, he served as head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Texas A&M.

Additionally, he has been awarded research funding from the U.S. Army, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Siemens, LG Electronics, the Trane Company and the Texas Governor's Energy Office.

O'Neal obtained his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University; a Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Oklahoma State University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University.
