Thomas Pope

Professor of Political Science

Lee University

Cleveland, Tennessee

Dr. Thomas Pope joined Lee's political science faculty in 2010, where he teaches courses in political theory and constitutional law. Since 2017, He has served as director of Lee University’s honors program, Kairos Scholars. He also serves as the university’s pre-law advisor and LSAC liaison, advising students across majors who are preparing for law school.

Dr. Pope’s Social Contract Theory in American Jurisprudence: Too Much Liberty and Too Much Authority is published by Routledge University Press. As one reviewer describes the work, "Pope breathes new life into the old debate in constitutional law between defenders of liberty and defenders of the interest of the community. He shows the futility of the unqualified acceptance of either alternative as a consistent guide to constitutional adjudication, and returns to the roots of modernity to explain how Thomas Hobbes brought these two principles together to provide a solid foundation for modern liberal politics. Both political theorists and constitutional scholars have much to learn from this subtle and thoughtful analysis."
