Work and Education
Dr. Carlson has taught in the NNP now DNP/NNP program at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing since 2008. Specializing in neonatal pharmacology, embryology and management of the acute and chronic neonate as an Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner. She teaches students through online lecture and Web based synchronous classes. Her lectures are informed by many years of professional experience practicing as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner in a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Charleston, SC, where she continues to work 2 nights per month.
Articles and Presentations
Outside the classroom, Dr. Carlson contributes to both nursing publications and nursing associations. She is past president of the National Association of Neonatal Nurses and is actively involved in various workgroups such as writing TPN Guidelines and course development for NICU Review course. She co-authored a chapter in 2020 on The Renal System in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification Intensive Review book. She has also developed and updated chapters on Pulmonary Emergencies and Procedural Review in The Golden Hours Care of the Very Low Birth Weight Infant.
Committees
As a new full time faculty member she is a a member of the DNP Program Committee.
Community
Cheryl lives in Daniel Island, SC with her husband. She has actively participated in walks for the March of Dimes for the prevention of prematurity and in events for the American Heart Association. She is currently working with the Community Center for the Medical University of South Carolina providing education in Neonatal Resuscitation for pediatric residents and staff, as well as providing education to nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Nursery.
