LHSON COVID-19, Grad Student Information, March 13, 2020
Dear LHSON Graduate Students, Faculty and Staff,
On Wednesday, March 11th, Baylor President Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D. announced that “Spring Break for students has been extended through next week. The spring semester will resume on Monday, March 23; however, classes will be provided strictly in an online environment for a two-week period from March 23 through April 3. “ This email is to inform you that there is an exception to this related to the Louise Herrington School of Nursing. All graduate program classes and clinicals will continue to be held, with the exception that the DNP intensive immersions scheduled during the next 3 weeks for the FNP and midwifery students which are cancelled. We will let the NNP students scheduled for intensives April 8-10th know as soon as we have more information as to whether or not the intensives will be held.
Students who live near geographic high-risk areas for COVID-19 exposure may choose to opt-out of attending clinicals and use flexible scheduling adjusting for their clinical hours during these next few weeks. All advanced practice students should be prepared to use precautions and procedures for self and patient protection during patient encounters to prevent transmission of infection. If you are notified by a clinical agency that you will not be allowed to come for your clinical hours, please notify your program coordinator to discuss alternative arrangements.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to practice social distancing and cough etiquette, as well as follow CDC recommendations for handwashing and the use of disinfectant on frequently touched surfaces.
Any students, faculty or staff who have traveled to countries outside the United States or to Washington State, New York or California are required to report this information to Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Linda Plank and will be required to self-isolate for 14 days and monitor for symptoms. All university travel except for mission critical business has been suspended through March 31st.
As President Livingstone noted in her email to the campus, “this is a challenging time, but the health and safety of our campus community remains our central focus at Baylor University. As members of the Baylor Family, we ask that you continue to pray for all those across the globe whose lives have been impacted by COVID-19 and for the public health officials, doctors and scientists who are working around the clock to end the outbreak. May they be the hands and feet of Jesus, our great physician.” I might also add that nurses are critical on the front lines in fighting this pandemic.
